Financial Aid Not Based on Parental Income If expenses are not met by need-based aid, students may borrow additional funds through the Unsubsidized Direct Loan program. The results of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid must be on file with the À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ Financial Aid Office to determine need-based eligibility before an application for the Unsubsidized Loan can be processed. Unlike the need-based Direct Loan, interest accrues while the student is attending school. Loan maximums and other regulations are the same as the Subsidized Direct Loan; however, the total Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans cannot exceed the maximum allowed for each grade level. Parents may borrow through the PLUS loan program. PLUS loans are long-term loans with a variable interest rate. Parents may borrow funds up to the school’s cost of attendance, less other aid received. For other loan options, contact the Financial Aid Office at (660) 785-4130 or by e-mail at finaid@truman.edu.
